Brighton goalscorer Welbeck relieved to rescue point against Sheffield Utd

Danny Welbeck admitted relief after scoring Brighton's equaliser for their 1-1 draw with Sheffield United.

Welbeck fired home from close range to cancel out Jayden Bogle's opener for United, who had John Lundstram sent off in the first half.

The Blades midfielder was initially cautioned for a studs-high challenge on Joel Veltman, but referee Peter Bankes upgraded the yellow card to a straight red after consulting his pitchside monitor.

The hosts had Chris Wilder's side pinned back inside their own half for the majority of the contest but failed to convert their chances.

Aaron Connolly, Neal Maupay, Leandro Trossard and Alireza Jahanbakhsh all spurned promising opportunities for the Seagulls, who remain precariously placed above the relegation zone.

Welbeck said, "It [his goal] couldn't have been more important in terms of circumstances the way the game went today - we needed to get the three points.

"I can't fully remember what happened [the chance at the end], these things happen in football but we've got to focus on ourselves and see what we can do to improve next game.

"We know we've got to put the ball in the back of the net to get the right result - it was a good finish by Jayden Bogle but we know we've got to do better in these situations and finish the game off.

"It's difficult - each game in the Premier league is but once they went down to 10 they sat back, and wanted to get us on the break. That makes it more difficult for us and we needed to be more decisive and accurate with our final pass and cross.

"Obviously going behind it's good to get the goal back, but with the circumstances and them having 10 men we really wanted the three points today."
