The Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) have confirmed that Adriano is experiencing "a delicate moment".
The Inter Milan striker chose to remain at home in Rio rather than return to Italy last week after taking part in Brazil's World Cup qualifiers.
A spokesman for the CBF said: "The striker Adriano is at home in the company of family members in Rio de Janeiro. Adriano is in contact with the (national team) coach Dunga and the leaders of Inter, keeping staff informed of the delicate moment that he is living.
"Unlike the rumours that run and do not correspond to the truth, we insist that Adriano is in Rio de Janeiro with his family."
