Former New York Red Bulls defender Andy Boyens has joined New Zealand teammate Simon Elliott on trial at Chivas USA.

The pair played in a pre-season friendly against Elliott's former club San Jose Earthquakes on Monday as new Chivas coach Robin Fraser runs the rule over the All Whites pair.

Boyens' Red Bulls contract ended at the completion of the 2010 MLS season after failing to appear in the league. He joined the club in 2008 from Toronto FC, playing over 30 times for New York. He has also represented New Zealand on 16 occasions.
