French champions Bordeaux got the upper hand on Olympiakos, winning 1-0 in Greece on Tuesday night.
Michael Ciani scored the only goal of the match right on the stroke of half-time to give Laurent Blanc's men the advantage going into the home leg of the Round of 16 clash.
Bordeaux put themselves in pole position to advance to the next round despite the fact that Ciani's goal came with a touch of controversy as referee Howard Webb awarded a so-so free-kick that the defender met with his head after Yoann Gourcuff's delivery was not cleared by Olympiakos.
The win maintained Bordeaux's undefeated record in the European competition so far this season and sets them up for the next round but they have still got a job to do on March 17 when the Greeks come to the Stade Chaban Delmas.
