Blackburn's Emerton, ex-Blackpool Carney linked with Sydney FC

A-League club Sydney FC are being heavily linked with a move for either Brett Emerton or David Carney. Recent reports suggest that one of the Australian internationals is being lined up to be the Sky Blues' newest marquee player with an announcement expected t be made this week.

It is believed that Blackburn Rovers midfielder Emerton has emerged as a strong target for Sydney with some news outlets suggesting a deal had already been done whilst free agent Carney, who was released by Blackpool at the end of last season, was unable to agree a deal to join Nottingham Forest and could also return to Australia.

But Sydney chief executive Dirk Melton has denied claims that a deal had been signed although he admits he would like to see the aforementioned players at the club if it were possible.

"There are still nine days left to the end of the transfer window so anything can happen," Melton said.

"Emerton has a year left in his contract and Carney has said he wants to play in Europe.

"They are both quality players and it would be wonderful if either one of them came to play for us.

"We need players that can help us connect to all key stakeholders ranging from fans and members, the broader community, corporate partners and the media."
