Birmingham fullback Murphy keen to hand signing-on fee to Hibs

New Birmingham City fullback David Murphy has handed his signing-on bonus to former club Hibs.

Murphy is preparing to pump a potential £200,000 from his move to St Andrew's into the future of former club Hibernian, says the Sunday Mercury.

Murphy joined Alex McLeish this week from Hibs after the Blues boss targeted the 23-year-old as his new left-back.

But the player also wrote off a six-figure sum which he was entitled to as part of the transfer.

Murphy could have had a sizeable golden handshake in the form of a 10 per cent cut of the deal, which could eventually rise to £2.3 million depending on appearances and Blues' Premier League survival.

But he has waived that as a thank-you to Hibs for letting him get another chance in the Premier League with Blues.

"I want that money to be invested in the future of Hibs," said Murphy, who began his career at Middlesbrough. "I feel it's a fitting way to thank the club for everything they have done for me over the last three-and-a-half years.

"The fans know that I am an English boy and for me the Premiership is the greatest league in the world.

"When I got the chance to join a club like Birmingham and work for a manager like Alex McLeish it was simply too good an opportunity for me to turn down.

"But I left Hibs with no bad feelings and I hope that by putting something back in it will help them."
