Birmingham boss Clark admits big regrets over Sunderland t-shirt drama

Birmingham City boss Lee Clark says he regrets how he left tonight's Capital One Cup opponents Sunderland.

Geordie boy Clark still regrets the day he upset the whole of Sunderland with a stupid T-shirt stunt.

Birmingham boss Clark was Sunderland's £2.5m record buy when he went to watch his beloved Newcastle in the 1999 FA Cup final and posed in a shirt emblazoned with the motif 'Sad Mackem B******s.'

He was run out of town, slapped on the transfer list and went down in North East folklore.

Clark said: "The T-shirt incident is a massive regret. I look back on it as stupidity. It's not something you should be doing.

"It wasn't as if I was walking round the streets of London, it was just a matter of seconds and you can imagine the amount of camera flashes.

"That was my choice but I'm a lot more mature now. I have to pay the consequence of my action - and that is what will happen.

"When the draw was made the phone was red hot. Most of it was from the Newcastle end but there are still people I know from Sunderland days so it was a mixture.

"It was hot when I went back before. There were 49,000 at the Stadium of Light, and it was very vocal.

"The toughest thing for me is everyone forgets the job I did for them as a player. That's the biggest regret. It's difficult for me to ever go and watch a game there like my other clubs."
