Bernard: Every Newcastle player gets Tyne-Wear derby education

Former Newcastle United defender Olivier Bernard says manager John Carver will be firing up his side ahead of the game against Sunderland by educating them on what the Tyne-Wear derby means to the fans.

Newcastle gear up for a clash against fierce rivals Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Suday and although the Magpies do not have much to play for this season, they will most certainly be desperate to inflict damage on their rivals.

One cannot overstate how much a victory over Sunderland means to the Newcastle faithful and now former defender Bernard has revealed that manager Carver will make everyone in his side aware of the importance of the clash.

The Frenchman told the Chronicle: "John made sure every player knew what this fixture meant. He's done it every year. Every foreigner or even if you come from down south they get taught and you have to learn about the desire to win that game.

"It's not a normal game. This is a territorial fight. It's more important than just winning three points. Winning this one feels like it's worth 10 points or more. I know John has done this for years. He will be even more meticulous."
