Benitez backs Rangers to see off Kaunas

Rafa Benitez has backed Rangers to progress to the third Champions League qualifying round - despite the horror-show in Saturday's 4-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Rangers face FBK Kaunas tonight with all to play for after a 0-0 draw in the first leg at Ibrox. And while the final scoreline on Saturday showed the gulf in class between the Premiership and SPL, Benitez believes Rangers showed enough quality in the first half to give them a good chance in Lithuania.

He said: "Rangers did well in the first half, they worked hard. They have important games coming up and, although I worry more about my own team, I thought Rangers started well.

"We expected them to make it tough and it was only in the second half, when they needed to go forward, that they left spaces."

His thoughts were echoed by fellow Spaniard Nacho Navo who feels Rangers have a real chance of a result in Kaunas.

"The first half would have been good to watch. That's a very good Liverpool side. It's good to test ourselves against a side of that quality," he said.

"We have another tough game on Tuesday, but we should be all right. Morale hasn't been hit," added the striker.
