Behrami: West Ham demise began with Zola sacking

Former West Ham United midfielder Valon Behrami has slammed the club's owners for sacking Gianfranco Zola.

He reckons his former club would never have been relegated if David Gold and David Sullivan had not sacked Zola and appointed Avram Grant last year.

Behrami claims: "The new owners sacked Zola for absolutely no reason.

"Everyone was backing the manager and no-one understood why he had to go.

"We had just had a difficult season but we had secured our Premier League place with two or three games to go despite a lot of uncertainty with the takeover.

"All the team felt with Zola in charge, we could improve. So the players were very sad when they sacked him.

"And the first day with Avram Grant, it was difficult to accept because everybody was still with Zola."
