Beckford beams after guiding Preston to promotion

Jermaine Beckford was over the moon after scoring a hat-trick for Preston North End on Sunday.

The 31-year old striker helped himself to a treble of goals as the Lilywhites dismantled Swindon Town 4-0 to win the League One play-off final at Wembley to gain promotion to the Championship.

On-loan from Bolton, the former Leeds United, Everton and Leicester City forward considered quitting the game in March when a serious ear infection had him sidelined for around a month but he was in buoyant mood after helping the Lancashire club into England's second tier.

"It makes it worth it after everything I've been through," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"To win promotion and get a hat-trick at Wembley, that hasn't quite sunk in. I'll be a bit teary eyed on the bus."

Regarding his future at Deepdale, Beckford stopped short of revealing whether or not he would be back in a Preston shirt next season.

"I tell you what I am going to do, I'm going to go and celebrate with my team-mates as I haven't had the chance yet," he added.

During his season-long spell with Preston, Beckford scored 18 goals in 26 league outings.
