Barton downs Di Canio as Milan edge Newcastle in Harper testimonial

An AC Milan XI have defeated a Newcastle United XI in goalkeeper Steve Harper's testimonial on Wednesday.

More than 50,000 supporters showed up to St James' Park to honour the 38-year old gloveman who spent 20 years with the Magpies before moving to Hull City on a free this summer.

The highlight of the match for Toon fans was when former midfielder Joey Barton, now with QPR, felled Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio in the second half.

But the Italian had the last laugh as he netted from the penalty spot to give the AC Milan Glorie a 2-1 win on penalties after the match ended 0-0.

The Newcastle XI was made up of the likes of Harper, Alan Shearer, David Ginola, Andy Cole, Faustino Asprilla and Peter Beardsley while the Milan side included Alessandro Costacurta, Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi and Mark van Bommel.

All proceeds from the event were donated to charities of Harper's choice which included the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation which raises money to fund the early detection and treatment of cancer.
