Arsenal failed with a bid for Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano last night.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had hoped to find a defensive midfield signing before the deadline fell and made an attempt for Mascherano yesterday.

But Barca refused to do business so late in the window and would not consider discussing terms with the Gunners.

The former Liverpool midfielder is in his third year at Barca.
