Barcelona great Carles Puyol has confirmed he's turned down the club's offer to make him their new sporting director.

Puyol was offered the post after the resignation of Pep Segura at the end of July.

"After weighing it up a lot, I have decided not to accept the offer from the club," Puyol tweeted.

"It hasn't been an easy decision, since I have always said I would like to return home, but various personal projects in which I am involved prevent me from giving Barcelona the exclusive dedication the position deserves.

"I would like to thank the club for the trust placed in me by offering me this position of great responsibility."
