Recent reports suggest that Major League Soccer expansion franchise New York City FC are showing significant interest in Barcelona captain Carles Puyol.
Diario Gol reports that NYCFC chief Ferran Soriano is looking to lure the 35-year old defender to the USA.
Soriano spent five years with Puyol at Barcelona before leaving to take up the chief executive role at Premier League club Manchester City, subsequently becoming NYCFC's main man after City purchased majority ownership.
It is believed that he is hoping to use his relationship with Spain international Puyol to bring him to New York as a Designated Player ahead of the 2015 MLS season when the brand new club, part-owned by Major League baseball's New York Yankees, enters North America's top flight.
Puyol has been at the Camp Nou for his entire professional career, which saw him debut for the Blaugrana in 1999, but it is being widely reported that he will leave the Catalan giants this summer.
