Jozy Altidore's call-up to the USA national team for the weekend's friendly with Costa Rica and Tuesday's meeting with Belgium has angered AZ Alkmaar manager Gertjan Verbeek.
The 21-year old striker has started his Dutch Eredivisie career in fine fashion, scoring three goals in four matches, and Verbeek admits he tried to stop Juergen Klinsmann calling the talented Altidore up for the double header.
"I tried to stop it, but he was adamant," Verbeek said.
"It's pure self-interest of a man (Klinsmann) who only one year has been a club coach [Bayern Munich] and immediately fired.
"That says it all."
Altidore played 62 minutes of Friday's 1-0 loss to Costa Rica and is expected to start against the Belgians in Brussels on Tuesday.
