AZ ace Johannsson recovering ahead of World Cup

Aron Johannsson has given the USA national team a boost by returning to action with AZ Alkmaar on Thursday night.

The 23-year old striker missed AZ's last three fixtures with an ankle injury before coming on as a second-half substitute in the Europa League play-off final against FC Groningen.

Johansson, who has scored 26 goals in all competitions this season, replaced Celso Ortiz in the 63rd minute before heading straight at Groningen keeper Marco Bizot in the stalemate.

The former Iceland U21 international will report to Juergen Klinsmann's pre-World Cup US training camp in Palo Alto, California early next week.

AZ and Groningen played out a 0-0 draw at the AFAS Stadion with the second leg to be played at Euroborg on Sunday. The winner will progress to the second round of qualifying for the 2014/15 Europa League season.
