Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood wants Carles Gil to fight for his spot in the starting line-up.
The Spanish midfielder, who was signed from Valencia in January, was unused as the Villans lost 1-0 at Newcastle United on the weekend.
"I preferred someone else. It is up to Carles now to prove on the training ground that he warrants a place (in the XI)," said Sherwood.
"Everyone is up for selection and everyone is going to get an opportunity to play between now and the end of the season."
Villa, who sit second bottom on the Premier League table, next take on West Bromwich Albion in the West Midlands at Villa Park derby on Tuesday night.
