Ashdown says Portsmouth pal James too old for England

Jamie Ashdown has told Portsmouth teammate David James he's too old to be England No1.

Ashdown, 26, has not played a Premier League game since keeper James, 37, arrived at Fratton Park last year.

But he says West Ham stopper Robert Green is the best Three Lions replacement for underfire Paul Robinson.

Ashdown said: "David's age is a big obstacle. If he were 28 or 29 then he would be straight in and stay there.

"Green is the one that's really impressing me at the moment."
