Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wants either Phil Jones or Chris Smalling in return for Thomas Vermaelen according to reports.
The Daily Star suggests that the Gunners boss is eager for one of the two Manchester United defenders to be included in any deal which could see club captain Vermaelen make his way to Old Trafford.
28-year old Belgium international Vermaelen has been linked with United for some time now after starting just seven times in the Premier League last season but will not be allowed to easily leave north London this summer.
Vermaelen has just a year left on his Arsenal contract which has prompted Wenger to play hard ball on his proposed departure in the way of a swap deal with 22-year old Jones or 24-year old Smalling.
