Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker is prepared to go into retirement without a league title to his name.

Mertesacker, 30, never won the league back in Germany and is preparing himself for the fact he might never manage it before hanging up his boots.

The Arsenal defender said: "If I look back on my career without having won a league title, I won't see that as a failure.

"I'll do my absolute best to make sure that I can prepare for that eventuality."
