Arsenal veteran Campbell retains England World Cup hopes

Arsenal veteran signing Sol Campbell admits he still has hopes of gatecrashing the England World Cup squad.

However, the 35-year-old acknowledges he needs to make the most of his limited opportunities to shine if he is to fulfil the dream.

Campbell told Arsenal TV: "You can look back at scenarios but ultimately you have to keep on looking forward if you want to get anywhere in your life.

"I haven't thought about it (an England call) but who'd want to turn it down?

"I would love to play for my country again. I wouldn't turn it down and say 'I'm going on holiday' or 'I'm getting married - see you later'...

"If the opportunity comes along I'd definitely seriously consider it - but the main thing is to get some games under my belt with Arsenal...I have to play some games for Arsenal and go from there really."

Campbell has played in two games since returning to the club, the 3-1 FA Cup defeat at Stoke and the goalless draw at Aston Villa in the Barclays Premier League.

He added: "It's a squad game so I'll probably get used throughout the season, there are a lot of big games.

"If someone takes a liking to me and wants to give me an opportunity I'd love to. But I've got to play well and show people what I can do.

"I've got to work hard, keep focused and if the opportunity comes along I'll take it.

"There's a lot of work to be done...it will come down to one man's decision."
