Arsenal's Gibbs to start for England in absence of Baines

England manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed that Kieran Gibbs will start this weekend.

The Three Lions take on Slovenia in Group E of Euro2016 qualifying at Wembley on Saturday and Arsenal's Gibbs will be the man to step into the left-back position after Leighton Baines was forced to pull out.

The Everton star suffered a hamstring injury at training, not long after England submitted their squad to UEFA, and Hodgson says that Gibbs will go straight into his starting line-up for their fourth qualifying fixture as Manchester United's Luke Shaw was not included in the roster.

Speaking of the Baines injury, Hodgson said: "We were about to head into a game situation. We'd only just begun when he felt his hamstring.

"Immediately he needed to stop training because he's an experienced player. He obviously realised that something wasn't right.

"I can't tell you the extent. We'll have to wait until the doctors at Everton do their analysis.

"It did mean obviously that he was out of the question for tomorrow and so Kieran Gibbs is the one who's going to come in.

"Unfortunately we'd given our squad at 11am as we are duty-bound to do by UEFA and because with Luke Shaw there were three left-backs, I left him out of the 23 because we had 24 players at the time.

"As it turns out, it's a pity that we can't use him."
