Arsenal legend Ian Wright can see Manchester United going the same way as Liverpool.
In his column for The Sun, Wright wrote: "I never thought I'd say this but for the first time I am even wondering whether Alex Ferguson will leave United in the same predicament as when he first arrived at the club back in 1986.
"Fergie's fall-out with Rooney is the last thing United need - as they no longer have strength in depth.
"When Fergie had issues with the likes of Jaap Stam, Ruud van Nistelrooy or David Beckham, there was always someone to fill the void.
"The problem is Rooney is United's talisman. There are very few occasions when the team delivers a great performance with him missing.
"There are no longer lots of other quality, young players around him.
"But it is behind the scenes at United which really worries me.
"The ownership issue at Old Trafford is far too similar to the one which has got Liverpool into such trouble - namely American businessmen who do not appear to be putting very much into the club, apart from giving it a massive debt.
"After the latest set of financial results, we were told United were in a healthy state. But while I'm certainly no expert, it appears to me the Glazers continue to saddle United with massive cash problems.
"As a result, they are no longer signing the quality players needed so, when a player like Rooney becomes unavailable or plays badly, the situation becomes critical."
