Arsenal great Merson backs ex-Liverpool keeper James to succeed in India

Paul Merson admits it is no surprise that David James has stepped into management and has backed the former England goalkeeper to do well India.

The 44-year old ex-Liverpool and Manchester City gloveman is player-coach of Indian Super League team Kerala Blasters and his former Aston Villa teammate Merson feels he has the football brain to succeed in management.

"I can see him being a manager," Arsenal great Merson told Sky Sports. "He had an opinion. He was a winner and he loved his football.

"He thinks about the game and he was always talking about it so it doesn't surprise me to see him as a manager in India.

"It will be a great experience for him and all the players involved to go over to India and play.

"I know the league is only 10 weeks or so, but there will be a lot of players over there who are home-sick.

"It's a long way from home for a lot of them and he has that experience of playing away from his locality, particularly when he was at Liverpool after leaving Watford. That will definitely help there can be no doubt about that."

The inaugural Indian Super League season kicks off this weekend with Kerala, who are co-owned by Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, playing their first match against the John Abraham-owned NorthEast United on October 15.
