Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has explained why he sent defender Matthew Connolly on-loan to Colchester.

"I have let him go to Colchester because he needs to play," Wenger told Arsenal.com. "He has made a big step forward but he will not learn a lot in the Reserve team anymore. Like every young player he needs to learn to cope with responsibility. You only get that when he plays in the first team."
