Former Agrentina and Tottenham midfielder Osvaldo Ardiles has expressed an interest in coaching in the A-League. The 56-year old was speaking at the Football Federation Australia's second annual coaching conference when he revealed his interest.

"It's always a possibility. Why not? I'm not working at the moment so if something happens we can talk," he told reporters.

"They have fighters and character," he said.

"It's in the technique and character part that is lacking. So first technique, then tactical."

Ardiles is well known in English football circles after playing over 200 matches for Tottenham Hotspur in the 70s and 80s and managing Swindon Town, Newcastle United, West Bromwich Albion and Tottenham.

He has also coached teams in other areas in Europe and in Japan's J-League.

"Japan is a touch higher than Australia because of the success of the J-League," he added.

"Japan came from absolutely nowhere in the world to become 27 or 28 in the rankings by FIFA [although they have now slipped to 37th place.] The national team represents the power of the league in that particular country.
