Anderlecht midfielder Cullen: Ask West Ham managers why I didn't make it there

Former West Ham United midfielder Josh Cullen is happy with his first weeks at Anderlecht.

Cullen left the Hammers over the summer to sign permanently with Vincent Kompany's Anderlecht. The Republic of Ireland international penned a deal to 2023 with the Belgian giants.

This season, Cullen has managed seven appearances under Kompany, with Anderlecht struggling in seventh position.

He is quoted by dhnet.be, "Choosing to leave West Ham a good few weeks ago was not easy but it had to be done when I was 24. I spent 15 years of my life there and there is bound to be a little sadness leaving.

"Why didn't I break through there? Frankly, I don't know. You should ask the different managers."

Indeed, despite 15 years with the Irons, Cullen managed just three appearances. Instead, he spent four years away on-loan with Bradford City, Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic. The 24 year-old is hoping for a fresh start with Anderlecht and the chance to be part of Kompany's rebuilding project.

He also said: "When the opportunity to sign for Anderlecht presented itself, I was very flattered. It is a club with tradition that still has a lot of ambition. It's just a shame not yet to have been able to discover the fans since it is behind closed doors."

Cullen enjoyed a full 90 in the weekend's 2-2 draw at Zulte Waregem. On-loan Manchester City striker Lukas Nmecha was on the scoresheet for the visitors. Also in the Anderlecht line-up was USA defender Matt Miazga, on-loan from Chelsea.
