Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi is convinced European football can be returned to St James' Park.
Ameobi - who is second in the club's all time European goalscorer chart - is one of the few survivors of the Toon side that qualified for the Champions League nine years ago and having experienced life under Sir Bobby Robson at Europe's top table knows what it takes to get back.
He told the Evening Chronicle: "Football can change very quickly.
"Fortunes in the game go up and down.
"Look at Tottenham, they are trying to get into the top four again this season and just over three years ago they were bottom of the league.
"Look at what Harry Redknapp has done.
"We know we have a long way to go to reach the heights of the Sir Bobby days and we're not kidding ourselves.
"It's a work in progress and we want to keep on improving like we have been and moving in the right direction.
"Anything is possible.
"We have to take one step at a time."
