Allegri thrilled as Cagliari defeat Juventus for first time in 40 years

Cagliari boss Massimiliano Allegri was thrilled with his players after their shock 3-2 victory over Juventus.

The Sardinians' last victory in Turin was in November 1968.

"I honestly did not think the players would make me get so good!" laughed Allegri. "I work every day with the lads and obviously it is easier when the results come in, as it boosts confidence.

"Don't forget many of the players in this squad are young - as am I! - so we made mistakes and learned from them."

He added: "When we wasted chances like the ones we did at Inter and Roma, those moments help you to grow and realise when to take advantage of an opponent that is struggling.

"We played very well tonight and above all allowed Juventus very little in the second half. That shows the strength of character, technique and work rate that my team has, as it's not easy to pick up 34 points.

"The secret is that the players are willing to work extremely hard and sacrifice themselves for the team.

"Don't forget we started out to avoid relegation and so strength is what's needed. We also have great quality, which is why we managed to get so many points."
