Allardyce: No Newcastle keeper guaranteed start

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce insists Steve Harper has his full backing.

Harper conceded four goals against Portsmouth last weekend and Allardyce was scathing of his back-four - although he excused his keeper of any blame.

And the Magpies boss has few qualms about relying on Harper and insists he would still be picking him, even if Shay Given was not injured.

"I bet David James had more saves to make in the first half than Stevie Harper against Portsmouth, and you cannot blame him for any of the goals," said Allardyce.

"Even though we made a bad mistake for the second goal, it was a terrific finish from Benjani.

"Steve will be in goal for however many games he performs well in.

"Shay will be out for a couple of weeks or so, then hopefully he stays as fit as he can."
