Alexandre Lacazette: Why Chelsea, Liverpool target faces transfer dilemma

So what should Alexandre Lacazette do? Strike when the iron's hot? Or wait a year for the biggest shop window in football?

At 23, Lacazette has just pulled off a French clean sweep. He's been named Ligue 1 Player of the Year, collected the league's Golden Boot and finally broken his duck for France.

Sonny Anderson, the former Barcelona and AS Monaco star, reckons he is a future Ballon d'Or winner. And France coach Didier Deschamps is now ready to back him for their Euro2016 campaign.

It's all fallen into place for Lacazette. But with Europe's biggest clubs now queuing to ferry him away from Lyon, he faces a dilemma. Does he stick or twist?

Leave for a bigger stage and he risks losing his place in Deschamps' plans. That first France goal came two years after his previous cap earned in South America.

Lacazette knows there's still plenty of doubters to win over.

"There is a lot of joy and pride," he said after scoring against Denmark. "This goal will perhaps not convince everyone, but it will definitely help me for the future."

"Alex has now shown he can adapt to our system," says Deschamps. "This goal will do him good."

At Lyon, where his place is guaranteed, he'll continue to play under the nose of Deschamps. Leave for England or Germany and there is the risk of all his work being undone if the move gets off to a slow start.

Teammates are hoping Lacazette stays another year, but do accept that prospect is becoming more remote.

"Of course he can go further," concedes OL winger Rachid Ghezzal. "There are not many players who have scored as many goals as him in a season.

"I hope he can reach another level by also shining for a big European club - just like Karim (Benzema) did before him."

Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea have all had scouts posted this season to regularly check on Lacazette's explosive goalscoring form. Bayern Munich and local rivals PSG are also weighing up bidding for the Frenchman.

Former Liverpool defender Chris Mavinga is a close friend and played in Ligue 1 last season with Riems.

"He can still go much further. He is with Lyon, in a very good club that has had a good season. But if he goes to an even bigger club with even better teammates, I think he can still take the next step.

"I'm confident he can reach the top.

"I say he can have a career like Benzema."

Anderson agrees with Mavinga and Ghezzal. The former Brazilian striker, who twice won the French Golden Boot with OL, is convinced by Lacazette's potential.

"He's only 23, he still has room for improvement. When he reaches the top of his career, I think he will have the opportunity to win the Ballon d'Or.

"Not in three or four years to come, but when he's 27, 28 or 29 years of age.

"Provided he continues to work and progress, he can do it. It all depends on him."

Anderson believes Lacazette should sit tight at OL for another year.

"A player must confirm his talent after his first successful season. If he can show this, then the clubs who are interested will want him even more next year."

Lacazette is well aware of the speculation and dropped a big hint last week at OL's awards evening that he could be moving on.

The striker won't forced the issue, but also accepts a football career can change in an instant.

"You never know what can happen in football," he said.

"This is not an open door, it's just reality."

Fleury Di Nallo, a genuine Lyon legend, is a huge fan and proud to see a local lad come through the OL system with such success.

"It's been an exceptional year for him," says Di Nallo, who played over 400 games for OL.

"It's beautiful seeing a player so young scoring the amount of goals he has this season."

And Di Nallo urges Lacazette not to doubt himself when the big clubs come calling.

"He has everything," enthuses the former France striker.

"He has the talent to play in any league - and for a long time."
