Aleksandar Mitrovic: Why Arsenal, Chelsea urged to go for 'Serbian Drogba'

He's the spiky Serb with the dodgy goal celebration. But at 20 and with a record of more than a goal every two games, Aleksandar Mitrovic has defied critics at Anderlecht and is now being courted by some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Fiorentina and AC Milan have all been linked with Mitrovic this season. A move to QPR in January was considered, then rejected, and Mateja Kezman, the former Chelsea striker, has told his fellow Serb he must make a change to England this summer.

"He has to go to the Premier League," says Kezman, who now works as a player agent. "Not to the top, but definitely to a better team.

"If you (Anderlecht) buy a player for €5 million and after two years you can get €15 million, then you should sell him and look for a new Mitrovic.

"I think he's better than I was. He has a lot of talent, a great presence and is reminiscent of Didier Drogba."

That €5 million Anderlecht splashed out two years ago was a club record. It was a move heavily criticised in Belgium, with many claiming the incoming Partizan Belgrade striker was incapable of living up to his billing.

Former Belgium star Wesley Sonck barked: "Sorry, I cannot understand why they have paid so much money for Mitrovic. €5 million?! Can someone explain to me what he adds?

"Okay, Mitrovic has scored ten goals, but actually everyone who walks in as a striker at Anderlecht should be getting 15-20 a season."

But Mitrovic, despite his tender years, has faced down the doubters to this season emerge as one of Europe's most dangerous strikers.

"I have not for a second regretted my choice of Anderlecht, because I feel very good at this club. Thanks to the top matches in Belgium and in the Champions League, I have made much progress. It's been important for my career," says Mitrovic.

Dad, Ivica, also admits Belgium has been a good move for his son.

"It's brought stability to his life," he says, highlighting the support Anderlecht have given his son during dips in form and questions about his weight.

"Anderlecht has always supported him in the most difficult moments. For example when he scored less and when there was criticism of his weight. That was a storm in a teacup, but the club surrounded him with the right people and taught him to be humble when needed.

"He now realizes that it does not help to kick out wildly like everyone is against him."

Ivica says Anderlecht coach Besnik Hasi has been key to Aleksandar's rapid rise.

"For a coach like Hasi who always protected him, my son would do anything. Most of all he wants to give him another championship."

But despite the strength of the relationship between player and club, Mitrovic concedes he may follow Kezman's advice and cut ties this summer.

"I have to think very carefully about my future. Of course, every player dreams of becoming a star in England, Germany, Italy or Spain. But a lot depends on Anderlecht.

"I will have to take into account many factors."

As for that goal celebration. We'll leave that to 'Mitro'.

"I do it so to cut off the tongue of my critics."

Erm, you get the drift...

"At first I did it to those who had criticized my weight. I was telling them to shut it. Now everything is under control, but the gesture has become a hit. The fans ask for it when I score, and I really mean nothing wrong with it. "

If Kezman has his way, on the Premier League's global stage, it will be a 'gesture' made famous around the world.
