Aldridge: Liverpool must play Gerrard in attack against Basel

Liverpool legend John Aldridge says Steven Gerrard must play in attack for their Champions League decider against FC Basle.

Aldridge wrote in the Sunday World: "Ten years have passed since Steven Gerrard's memorable winning goal against Olympiacos in the Champions League - and I suspect he could be the main man all over again in this vital decider against FC Basel on Tuesday night.

"The incredible, late Gerrard goal that pushed Liverpool into the last-16 of Europe's elite competition a decade ago paved the way for the most extraordinary triumph the club has ever witnessed in the final in Istanbul a few months later.

"While I don't see that story being repeated, a place in the last-16 is vital to revive this season.

"That's why I am encouraging Brendan Rodgers to deploy Stevie in an advanced role and let him cause havoc at the right end of the field, rather than restrict him from making an impact in the game in the deep lying role he excelled in last season.

"With Daniel Sturridge still out injured, Liverpool need to find a goal threat to hurt Basel and in Adam Lallana, Raheem Sterling and Rickie Lambert, they have three players who can create and score their fair share of goals.

"Yet history confirms that when the big matches roll around and Liverpool need their talisman to deliver a crucial strike, Gerrard comes up with the goods and, even if he is not as fresh as he once was in the final third of the field, Stevie is still a top class talent who can frighten Basel."
