Toby Alderweireld has indicated that he would like to return to Southampton next season.

The Belgian defender, 26, spent last season on loan with the Saints from Atletico Madrid and thoroughly enjoyed his time in the Premier League.

With the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham reportedly showing interest, Alderweireld has suggested that perhaps he would better suited to heading back to the St Mary's Stadium on a permanent deal rather than spending time as a substitute with a bigger club.

"My father has recently spoken with Atletico and they want me back, but I do have a feeling that I am at a club that I like," said Alderweireld.

"I have shown my ability in the Premier League and I do not want to spend another season sitting on the bench. I will go back to Spain next week and we will talk."

He added: "We will see what happens. I hope a decision will be made quickly, otherwise it will be all summer. "I don't know if Chelsea are interested but I have read a little bit in the press. Let's see what comes up and I will make a decision. We will see what clubs come in."
