Agbonlahor: Take Aston Villa captaincy away from McGinn

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has called for John McGinn to be stripped of the captaincy.

The Scotland star was absent from the line-up as Villa ran out 4-0 winners over Brentford at the weekend.

Leon Bailey, Ollie Watkins and a double from Danny Ings helped the Premier League strugglers out of their recent poor run of form, fresh off the sacking of manager Steven Gerrard.

But McGinn was relegated to a substitute in the match as he only made a late appearance on the hour mark at Villa Park.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Agbonlahor claimed that McGinn 'doesn't need to be captain'.

He said: "Villa fans weren't overly happy about that, the way it was done.

"And I think that added more pressure to John McGinn, it was unfair.

"And I have seen him with Scotland, he's worn the armband, and he's everywhere as a leader, scoring goals with the armband as well.

"I don't think he needs to be captain. I feel like John McGinn will play the same and be a leader on the pitch without the armband.

"Some players like Tyrone Mings, when they've got the armband, it adds to their game. They feel like they have to be that much stronger.

"So I would look at giving it back to Tyrone Mings or Emiliano Martínez."
