Nigel Adkins has revealed Brian McDermott convinced him about taking the Reading job.
Adkins was yesterday unveiled as McDermott's successor and immediately promised to mastermind a miracle relegation escape.
The former Southampton manager initially rejected the job last week before performing an 11th-hour U-turn.
Adkins, 48, said: "I spoke with Brian and he told me the Reading fans are fantastic, the players are fantastic and that there is a great camaraderie and spirit around the place.
"He had nothing but good things to say about the club and will always be welcome back here. He is a top man.
"This is a great club. I was impressed when I met owner Anton Zingarevich. There is a stability here and I'm excited about the future."
