A-League review - Finals Week 1

The first week of the 2009/10 A-League finals series is complete with only four teams left standing. The action kicked off on Thursday night when the top two teams, Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC, met at Etihad Stadium.

The Sky Blues were coming off a solid 2-0 win the weekend before that landed them top spot and the Premiers' Plate whilst the Victory gave up their stranglehold on the coveted first-place finish on the final day of the regular season but the tables turned in the first leg of the major semi-final with the home side getting the job done, winning 2-1.

On Saturday night, Gold Coast United's good debut season came to an end when they were beaten on penalties by the Newcastle Jets after a scoreless draw and on Sunday, after the match ended 1-1 after extra time, Wellington Phoenix advanced to Week 2 after knocking Perth Glory out on penalties.
