Manchester United weighed up a potential last ditch bid for Borussia Dortmund striker Marco Reus on deadline day, but were unwilling to match the German club's £60million asking price.
ESPN FC is reporting the Red Devils contacted Dortmund to investigate Reus' availability, but withdrew their interest once they learned of the Bundesliga club's valuation of the 26-year-old.
It is understood United were willing to pay up to £50million to acquire Reus' services.
Reus signed a new four-year deal with Dortmund in February.
