Former VfL Wolfsburg sporting director Jorg Schamdtke may begin his time with the Reds as an advisor.

Schmadtke has been in talks with Liverpool since February as they seek a new sporting director.

However, BILD's Christian Falk reports the initial position could be "external".

He stated: "According to our information, Jörg Schmadtke is actually in talks with Liverpool first about a post as 'external consultant for transfers' for temporary support."

Schmadtke is expected to eventually replace departing Julian Ward as Liverpool sporting director.
