Rooney happy (& 'nervous') after winning Derby debut

England great Wayne Rooney was happy to make his Derby County debut in victory over Barnsley.

The former Manchester United and Everton striker had a hand in both goals of the 2-1 win.

The 34 year-old player-coach said, “It is a new chapter in my career and I want to try and help Derby get promotion in the next year and a half to two years.

“It was a good start for us tonight.

“I'm delighted to get 90 minutes, I felt good and we got the three points."

Asked whether he was nervous ahead of his return to English football, Rooney said: “The manager stressed to me he wanted me to be captain. I am nervous before every game - not nerves when you are scared but nerves when you are thinking about the game.

“I had no doubts about my ability though.

“I played at a high level in the US. I am still fit and as long as I am fit I know what I can do on the field.

“It's nice to be out there and help the team get the win.

“When you are involved in goals it is good and when you work on something it is nice when it pays off."
