Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has taken the No9 shirt with Denmark.
Espanyol's Martin Braithwaye usually wears the number.
Hojlund said after victory over Kazakhstan that Braithwaite, who was not selected this time, gave him a message after their last meeting.
"The number has previously been Martin's, and he told me last time that he thinks I should have it going forward, and I really appreciate that," he said.
"Martin is a huge national team legend, and it is a huge honor to take the number from him.
"He just said that as long as I kept bombing, it was good for my image going forward, and he wants to give me that number.
"I just want to say huge respect to him, and as I said, Martin is a huge figure in the national team and has scored some important goals for Denmark."
