Liverpool loanee Awoniyi confident form will help him realise World Cup dream

Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi is hoping a strong performance for Nigeria in a friendly can help him make their World Cup squad.

The Super Eagles will take on Serbia in Barnet later this month.

Awoniyi, signed by the Reds in 2015, is currently enjoying his third consecutive spell on loan, this time at Royal Mouscron in Belgium. The 21-year-old has been a regular in Tribalfootball's Loan Watch segment, with his season tally now stretching to eight goals.

"For me, my main concern is to keep working hard for Mouscron," Awoniyi says. "It's about scoring as much as I can, assisting goals.

"With the national team, the administrators and the coaches know the quality we have, and they know about me. There are a lot of Nigerian players in Belgium for them to watch, and hopefully I can catch their eye."

Liverpool keep in regular contact with Awoniyi, who trained at Kirkby during the last international break.

And Awoniyi has said he always watches Liverpool games and identified Roberto Firmino as a player he wants to emulate.

"At the moment Firmino is my favourite player. "He does things unbelievably well, and I think he should be rated even higher.

"As a young player, when I see him playing I cannot stop watching. What he does, he makes life easy for those around him, Mane, Salah and everybody. He always plays for the team."
