Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has been holding talks with the club's potential buyers.
The investment group 777 Partners is in line to purchase the Goodison Park team.
The Times reports that Moshiri is seriously considering moving on from the group.
However, Everton would owe 777 money as the group has given the club a loan to let it continue operations.
The group Leadenhall Capital Partners has brought a case against 777 in a New York court.
