Barton's Bristol Rovers promoted to League One after 7-goal victory

Bristol Rovers have won promotion to League One despite not being in the top three all season.

Joey Barton's side managed to put seven goals past Scunthorpe this afternoon and climbed into the third automatic promotion place on goal difference. Bristol Rovers had a mountain to climb with the team needing a five-goal swing over their promotion rivals Northampton.

The game finished late as fans invaded the pitch seconds after the seventh goal went in, with Barton having to appeal to fans over the tannoy system to retake their seats in the worry that the game would be suspended. The side were just 2-0 up at halftime with promotion rivals Northampton 3-0 up making the task even harder for the Pirates.

Not only was it a historical day securing promotion, it was also the first time Bristol Rovers had scored seven goals in one match since 1964
